Our September trip to the Vistula Spit was so enjoyable that we decided to return there, preferably the following year. We didn’t expect that only a few months would pass before we went back — and only because our little son, Jaś, came up with the idea that he wanted to spend his third birthday on the beach. We liked the idea, so for his birthday we headed once again to Kąty Rybackie.
Before the trip
Before going to the seaside, we had to find a place to stay. We wondered whether to stay in Krynica Morska, again in Kąty Rybackie, or somewhere else. In the end, we decided that Kąty Rybackie would be the most convenient, and we could always drive to other places. We only booked accommodation in a different place than before.
Day One
We left for Kąty Rybackie the day before our son’s birthday, so that we could start celebrating from the very morning.
We set off quite early, planning to stop somewhere along the way, ideally during Jaś’s nap. The first part worked out — we stopped for a break, some playtime at a playground, and lunch. The nap, however, didn’t happen.
After our break, the weather started to worsen. It rained from time to time, lightly or heavily. It only cleared up once we entered the Vistula Spit.
This time we booked a room at Cztery Kąty on Rybacka Street 127 (https://wakacyjnekaty.pl). I originally found the place on Booking, but out of curiosity I checked how much the room would cost when booking directly with the owner — and the price difference was significant. So I booked directly through the owner’s reservation system.
We received a spacious room on the second floor with a kitchenette and a balcony overlooking the Vistula Lagoon. The property also had parking and a playground. The room was well-kept and well-equipped. We had everything we needed, so it’s quite possible we’ll stay there again next time.
Once we unpacked and freshened up, we headed to the beach. Instead of taking the main path, we chose a forest trail from Portowa Street to entrance number 49. The beginning of the trail was pleasant, but the rest — torn up by heavy vehicles used for transporting wood — was tough, especially with a stroller. But once we reached the final hill with a view of the sea, we forgot all about the difficult path.
We spent the evening on the beach, dipping our feet in the icy water, walking around, playing in the sand, and flying a kite. Despite being tired, we felt wonderful. We enjoyed being together, the peace, and the sound of the waves.
We returned to our room when it was already dark. This time we even passed some wild boars snacking on something on the other side of the road. We went to sleep quickly so that the next day we could surprise Jaś for his birthday.
Jaś’s birthday
For Jaś’s third birthday, we drove from Kąty Rybackie to Krynica Morska. We parked in an almost empty parking lot right next to the fishing harbor, so the beach was just a stone’s throw away.
There were more people on the beach than in Kąty Rybackie, but it was still peaceful. We set up our things and started jumping over the waves with Jaś, playing in the sand, kicking a ball — over and over again. Then it was time for the surprise. Before the trip, I baked a meringue at home to serve as his birthday cake. It was my first time making such a dessert, and it didn’t look like the pictures, but it tasted good. We lit a candle and, just as Jaś had wished, sang “Happy Birthday” to him on the beach. We only ate the cake after multiple rounds of singing and blowing out the candle — until there was nothing left to light.
After the birthday surprise, we went back to playing on the beach. When we noticed that Jaś was getting sleepy, we packed up and went for a walk with the stroller.
From the fishing harbor we walked all the way to the pier — quite a long distance. During that time, Jaś didn’t close his eyes even once. As we walked along the pier, a lady approached us, encouraging tourists to take a boat trip. We were actually hoping for that, so we agreed immediately.
Before the small group set off, Jaś had the chance to turn the ship’s wheel. He got a bit scared, thinking he’d have to do it the whole time, but we reassured him. He really enjoyed the cruise, but since it was long past his nap time, the rocking lulled him to sleep, so we put him in the stroller.
After the cruise, my wife and I went for a walk around the area. It was quite loud there, so after a short while we headed back toward the fishing harbor, stopping for ice cream along the way.
On the way to the beach, Jaś woke up. Unfortunately, he hadn’t slept long, so he was cranky. Before returning to the beach, we stopped at an ice cream shop to fulfill another birthday wish — we bought him an ice cream, or rather a sorbet. Then we went for lunch at a beach bar, where we ordered fried flounder sets. It was expensive, small, and not particularly tasty.
After lunch, we stayed on the beach until evening — playing in the water and sand, walking around, and kicking a ball. Before sunset, we returned to our room in Kąty Rybackie, watching out for deer crossing the road.
We had a great day and fulfilled our son’s birthday wishes.
Third Day of Our Trip to Kąty Rybackie
The next day of our May trip, we didn’t get up very early. We had considered driving somewhere farther to do some sightseeing, but since it was supposed to be a sunny day, we decided it would be nice to spend it on the beach.
So we went for a walk to the beach in Kąty Rybackie, this time taking the R10 path to the main entrance. But before that, Jaś had to play on the playground at our accommodation. Once he was ready, we headed to the beach.
We spent practically the entire day there. It was hot, so we kept changing activities — walking, playing ball, building in the sand, dipping our feet in the water, and jumping over waves with Jaś. I even went for a swim in the icy water. It was wonderful.
During our almost all-day stay, we only took a short break for lunch. While Jaś slept in the stroller, my wife went to the nearby Wielorybek restaurant to get takeaway food. We ate lunch on the beach, partly while Jaś was still asleep.
It was our last day on the beach. There was lots of fun but also plenty of rest. In the evening, we took a walk around Kąty, looking for a public playground, but unfortunately didn’t find one.
It was exactly as it should be. The next day we had to return home.
Return Home
On the day we were leaving Kąty Rybackie, the weather forecast showed worsening conditions. So we packed early in the morning. My wife and Jaś went to play on the playground while I loaded our bags into the car. We played together for a bit longer and then headed home.
Before reaching home, we decided to stop in Ostróda. We wanted to enjoy the sunshine before the clouds and rain arrived.
In Ostróda, we parked near the amphitheater. We immediately went down to Lake Drwęckie and walked along the promenade toward the town center. There were quite a lot of people, probably because of some board game competition.
We didn’t get far. Jaś spotted a large playground, where we spent a lot of time. Once he was done playing, we continued walking — but only as far as the ice cream shop by the pier. We bought ice cream and ate it on the pier. From there, we returned to the playground, where Jaś played a bit more, but when we saw he was already exhausted, we went to the car.
On the way home, Jaś fell asleep quickly and slept until Płońsk. From there it was about an hour to home, and another surprise was waiting for him — his grandma, a birthday cake she had made for him, and presents. Jaś was very happy with the surprise.
It was another trip we spent together. A trip during which I once again appreciated how enjoyable it is to spend time by the sea. With a child, there’s no beach boredom — there are plenty of activities and the effort is comparable to hiking in the mountains. Highly recommended.
